Arachnids have 8 legs and 2 main body parts – the front part (head and chest together) and the back part (abdomen). They have a hard outer shell: Spiders wear a hard outer covering (exoskeleton) that protects them like armor. They never have wings or antennae.
Arthropods are a huge group of animals that includes insects, spiders, and crabs – making up about 80 out of every 100 animals! All arthropods share three special features: Exoskeleton – They wear a hard shell on the outside like a suit of armor. Segmented bodies – Their bodies are split into sections, usually a head, middle (thorax), and end (abdomen). Jointed legs – Their legs bend at joints, just like our elbows and knees. The Four Main Groups: 1) Insects, 2) Arachnids, 3) Crustaceans – Most live in water and have 10 or more legs. Examples: crabs, lobsters, shrimp. 4) Myriapods – Sometimes up to 750 legs! Examples: centipedes, millipedes.
