Brief History of the Event

Following years of successfully running Math Mountain and Math Island, a completely new event (Pirate Math), was created by a retired elementary school teacher.

In 2001 there was the excitement of Math Mountain – including giant game boards, game pieces, and an actual fiberglass mountain. At one point, there was even interest in holding a District-wide event at a large venue such as the Township Auditorium. Such an event could be held for any interested district (or even an inter-district competition). Today, the Challenge Station, tokens to earn and Token Tubes of Pirate’s Challenge provide the same intensity and excitement.

In the early years, my class competed with the rest of the Caughman Road 5th grade. Soon, we took it on the road, holding events at 5 other Richland One schools, plus Caughman Road (no longer competing ourselves). Yes, my students ran it under my guidance. People were always amazed at what a class of 4th and 5th graders could do when given the opportunity and responsibility, but they did a GREAT job. In 2005, we held a District Championship – bringing in the first place finishers from each grade level at each school! Scroll down to watch a video my students made at A.C. Moore Elementary School.
