Helpful Info

I provide the questions. You pick them.

  • Multiple choice questions are not used.
  • If you like, you may supply the questions – which I will put into the format needed for printing. Question Space: 3.25 x 4.9 inches
  • How to choose your questions is explained when the questions are sent to you. Note: You may choose to use standards from two grade levels. This is useful early in the school year.
  • All questions are based on SC standards.
  • You get to review the questions and decide which ones you want. (They are sample questions. Use them if you like. The actual event questions will keep the same format, but change names, numbers, etc.). For example, Captain Nick may become Captain Slim Jim, and 2 + 4 may become 6 + 3. The standard will still be followed for the question.

In addition to the standards-based questions and step-by-step teachers instructions, I will also supply …

  • Answer stations, keys, and other materials needed to run the event and create an exciting atmosphere.
  • Answer Checker & Student Directions

What is needed to make the most effective use of your time and have the event go smoothly?

Of course, I can only run it on time when teachers and students are prepared before hand. (I’ve just found that everything goes better for you, me, and the students, when everyone knows their part.)

Make Sure That …

  • Each class has its own team color.
  • Each class is divided into six groups. (This can be adjusted for schools with smaller classes.)
  • Students know their team color and group number. (I recommend balanced groups. Consider how students get along with each other as well as math abilities.)
  • Students bring pencils and blank scratch paper. (Answers are written on the questions provided.)
  • Students understand that your class will do best – and they will have more fun – if their group works well together and let’s everyone help.
  • Volunteer Answer Checkers (if you have them) are helpful, and should arrive early enough to review their jobs. (I will arrive plenty early to sign in at the office and set up.)
  • Note: Using teachers as Answer Checkers honestly requires trust in each other. It is difficult to resist helping students when your pride as a teacher kicks in, so the question becomes, “How much do you trust your colleagues?” This also makes teachers available for student encouragement and behavior management.
